october ended with halloween, of course. only one school party to go to since we only have one still in elementary. max dug through his toy box and found the karate man/ninja guy costume blake wore when he was in 3rd grade himself, and that's what he chose to wear. they were allowed to wear their costumes all day at school, which was fun for them!

they had a little parade on the playground then went back to their classrooms for their parties. besides eating pizza and way too much candy, they drew faces on pumpkins so they could take them home and carve them. and here i thought i'd gotten out of pumpkin carving this year. i always have insisted on jack-o-lantern making but it had gotten to the point where i'm the only one doing it, the boys watch for 2 minutes then off they go. so i didn't plan on it this year. didn't even buy a pumpkin. (kathy donated from her stash later on - thanks kathy...)

anyway, when we got home from the party, the carving commenced. max and a sharp knife. this has never happened before and i wasn't the least bit excited about it. but he did great. and of course i hovered over him to make sure no fingers came off. he was pretty disgusted by the pumpkin guts. he did a good job for his first time out. he'll probably never be a plastic surgeon but that's ok. that evening was trick-or-treat.

we don't even buy candy anymore because no one comes down in our little circle. and last year i decided that max is my last trick-or-treater and he won't do it that much longer, so i'm not sitting around with a bowl of candy to hand out, i'm walking with my boy! (why should greg have all the fun?) we always walk around with some friends from church/neighbors. we end up with

quite a crew and it seems to grow every year. luke decided last minute that he was going to beg for candy too. he dressed up like a philadelphia eagles fan (which he is) and put on a crazy mask. he's 13 but not so tall yet, so he could get away with it.

max added a darth vader cape and light saber to his ensemble. blake put on my old punkin shirt and walked with us for crowd control. he came in very handy later on when greg went to help a neighbor and i ended up with 6 other boys in addition to my own. i'm used to looking around for boys and counting to 3 before i can breathe easy. counting to 9 boys was a little more work, especially since only a couple of them were not dressed halloweenieish but i managed. and we have enough candy to last til easter.
