i'm pretty well addicted to food network. i know that's as weird as my other addiction issues. but anyway, a few weeks ago on an episode of "ham on the street" this guy made what he called a kid-friendly fruitcake. instead of sugary candied fruit, he just used sugary candy. make sense? max and i thought this looked like a pretty good idea so we bought the ingredients for someday when we had time to make it.

today we had time! max helped a lot, adding the eggs one at a time, measuring all the gummy worms and gummy bears and twizzlers and chocolate chips and butterscotch chips and jelly beans and then shaking them in flour. the batter tasted really good so i was sure the cake would. it turned out pretty well, except that some of that candy melted like lava all around it while it baked and then cooled hard as a rock like a border around the pan. once we dug the cake out, we discovered it tastes great. kathy and i thought the cake would be good without the candy too. secret word for next time is "parchment paper".
