our boy scout troop (troop 59 we're mighty fine!) has its biggest fundraiser every spring. it's called

"mulch madness" and seriously, it is madness from start to finish. the boys take mulch orders and then do home delivery. it is such a huge amount of work (around 3700 bags of mulch this year) but really is fun if there's enough help.

last year, not so much fun. this year, LOTS! it's really quite an operation, lots of details involved. lots of prep work done, mainly by our assistant scoutmaster jon. anyway, we spent a friday and saturday doing mulch. donna, erica and i learned how to do "mulch central" - organizing delivery areas and which orders go where and when. we have to take over that job next year because jon and denise's son will be an eagle scout soon and gone!

i think we'll be able to do it, if after a year's time we can remember that we even learned it. the boys and the men worked very very hard. and ate a lot of food. and drank a lot of water and juice and pop. and had a really good day.

the women worked hard when the men were around -

telling them what to do and where they were going and bossy stuff like that. when they weren't around we talked, of course. and tried to keep warm. fortunately my parents live close to our "site 2" and dad let me borrow his electric space heater and his kerosene heater. aaaaahhhhhh. relief from the cold. it was a long couple of days, and with only a morning of rain, as opposed to last year when it rained pretty much the whole daggone time. whatever the weather, it was a great chance to spend a day involved in something with our family as a whole. we might as well enjoy it - we have at least 9 more years of it!
