barker ridge wildlife

while we were out on our adventure tuesday (during one of the times my dad was telling us we weren't lost) we saw this little guy out in the road. "OOOOHHHH A TURTLE!!!" we said, like we'd never seen one before. it's the little things, right? we stopped to take a picture (?) and get him out of the road but it quickly escalated (or maybe went downhill) to "can we keep him can we keep him". so we're keeping him. we spread out some plastic bags in the well in the back of the van and luke and max took care of turtlenapping duties and gathering up some grass to put in there with him/her/it for the ride home. blake stayed in the van and just watched it all. when we got home luke and max put him in a cage my dad had made years ago for some hermit crabs they got at the beach. along with aquarium rocks and various other things they decided to stick in there. but that whole set up seemed unfair to him/her/it, at least it did to me. everyone but luke felt like we needed to have a turtle release sometime soon. luke mentioned that he had been hoping to buy a 10 gallon aquarium to put it in. i told him that we could go to the pet store and talk to them about turtles and what would be needed to keep him alive and happy (are turtles able to be happy?) and if he wanted to be responsible for those things with his time and his money he could do that. which translates into luke buying the aquarium, bark mulch for the bottom of it and a little water contraption. we have lettuce and other salad type things, which is what they said to feed it. so luke's got the turtle (his name is barker, by the way) all set up. and i'm not sure about happy, but it is a bit more active in its new digs. he's sassy though...hisses when he's picked up. we did a little googling yesterday afternoon and found out that barker is a box turtle. he's an omnivore so he may appreciate more than salad. which luke decided means he won't be hand-feeding the thing its lettuce.

You are super mom. Do me a favor. Don't let my girls know about this. I will never let them keep the box turtles when we find them. And yes, we stop and rescue them every time we see a poor turtle trying his hardest to cross the road.
