blake auditioned (and was chosen!) for collegium musicum, which is a renaissance-style ensemble choir at his school. being a part of this means wearing a renaissance-style costume...which means your mom, who hasn't sewn anything clothing related for about 15 years, has major heart palpitations at the thought of it.

(i think the last thing was a little jungle animal shorts/shirt outfit for my nephew drew...and i sewed the pockets in upside down in that.) anyway. this is velvet, people, which is a little pricey and makes me nervous. i quickly enlisted (begged for) help from our friend connie, who graciously agreed. she's had some experience in this area, and isn't afraid of velvet or shiny trim. we thought we'd have some time in the summer to work on it (it's due, performance-ready, by this wednesday).

blake's velvet was to be green. it was ordered but didn't come in until late august. YIKES! and our combined schedules haven't allowed us to get together to sew until the last week or two. so we've had some marathon notion-shopping/velvet-cutting/sewing sessions here recently. and we made it through a "we've run out of velvet" crisis unscathed. not to mention a "why didn't we buy lining for the doublet" ordeal. once i made the first few stitches in the process of making his cap, the

velvet didn't freak me out anymore. and the shiny trim has actually been my favorite part. connie just sews and sews and listens to me talk to myself and says "tell me when i should answer." and she's encouraged me a lot along the way - very patient with my sewing tutorial. i've had a lot of fun sewing with her. and doesn't blake look like he just loves being a mannequin? connie made the doublet (the most work in that!),

i made the cap, and we've done the cape together. ordered the shirt (puffy pirate shirt) online. feather is waiting on greg to come buy it at magic makers. and we need to work on finding some shoes. but we're almost there. we need to finish the cape and i need to sew the buttons on the doublet. it'll all be together by wednesday but the shoes, and what blake already has will have to work in the meantime. i can't wait to see him in it when it's completed. i just smile when i see him in it in each little trying-on session. at first he thought i was smiling because i thought he looked silly. i had to make sure he knew it was just because i'm excited for him. and so proud of him.

that is the best picture of blake! his teeth/smile/eyes so bright and sparkling. tell him i like it better for his myspace profile.
cant wait to see the finished product.
reading a blog on sewing makes sweat beads form on my forehead.
I talk to my self when I sew too. Mom gets so mad! she is a very patient person most of the time, but not when it comes to me sewing. i am always asking questions that I know the answers to and just want some affirmation on. Maybe I should come sew with you guys! It looks GREAT!
