friday began with breakfast at a 2-story mcdonalds, so for max i wasn’t sure it could get any better than that. fortunately, there were more metro trips, airplanes and lots of dinosaur bones awaiting us, so things did get even better in his eyes. i probably should let one of my males do this blog entry because a couple of our destinations that day had my eyes rolling around in my head…..zzzzzzz…..

but maybe that’s just me. i know i’ve already mentioned my feelings about the natural history museum. and the air and space museum has about the same effect on me. air and space did have some pretty fun statues for weirdos like us to interact with. so of course we did.

that guy had a hole in his leg and none of us could figure out why. he looked a little bothered by it himself, but who wouldn't be? in the bathrooms they have turbo air hand dryers which make the skin on your hands move around all over the place…weird…and very enjoyable to little people. max even got a picture of his hand under it.

and the boys got to ride on a flight simulator. watching that from the outside was pretty humorous. blake was the pilot and max was the “shooter”. i’m surprised neither one of them puked because blake had that thing rolling around and around almost the whole time. no big shock that he crashed and burned. glad it was just a simulation! i think we all agreed that the best part of the air and space museum was the tiny little portion it houses of the

american history museum, which is closed for renovations. i was really happy in there because i got to see dorothy’s ruby red slippers and kermit the frog and jerry seinfeld’s puffy shirt, among other things. but we came upon a treasure in the form of a museum docent who was absolutely totally in love with american history. and she filled us in on all kinds of things, especially about the declaration of independence.

she apologized a couple times for taking up so much of our time but we LOVED it. she ended up drawing quite a crowd. so great! and after her, airplanes were kind of boring so we wandered around a little more then left for the natural history museum. and we actually didn’t spend as much time as we usually do in there, so i was kind of grateful for that unexpected joy. we went to the national archives and got to see the bill of rights and the declaration of independence. couldn’t see the constitution because the cases that hold it were under repair. blake was a little disappointed about that because it was one of the things he most wanted to see. now as odd as it was for greg to spring for the tourmobile at arlington national cemetery, imagine our surprise when he hailed a cab to get us down to the lincoln memorial.

i wasn’t actually surprised, because he told me he was going to – totally worth whatever the fare was to be spared a few minutes of max whining about how his feet hurt. blake had no idea what greg was doing and i think was just embarrassed because his dad was on the curb waving his arms at oncoming traffic. ahhh, the joys of being 15…anyway, into the cab we hopped and to the lincoln memorial we went. that is hands-down my favorite memorial. i never ever get tired of looking at it or of reading his words inscribed on the walls there. from there we walked along the vietnam war memorial. this is always pretty sobering. name after name after name, and flowers and notes and family members touching the name of their loved one. after this we decided to get a closer look at the white house. as we were walking there,

a helicopter flew by, on it’s way to the white house. this was when greg turned into a little boy.

“that’s the president! i know it is! that’s george! i’m sure of it!!!!” just a few seconds later it left again and he did the same thing. so we are certain we either saw W fly in or fly out, just not sure which. we were even more sure when we got to the white house and there were still a bunch of sniper types up on the roof. after this we walked. and walked. and then we walked. i don’t know why we walked so much at that point because we really didn’t go anywhere of importance. just walked.

eventually we plunked ourselves down on the metro and went “home”. actually we ended up doing some more walking, this leg of it uphill to go find someone to feed us supper. we found them (they were at ruby tuesday’s) and they fed us and then off we went to the hotel for, you guessed it, another evening of laziness. oh, but not before we picked up our evening starbucks yum.

1. if i posed with that dude with the hole in his leg and sprawl across his lap and he'd be looking at me instead.

Your trip to DC sounds awesome, I can't wait until mine are a little older and we can go. I love museums, and the history.
