first of all, here's what's happening with my grandmother's rose bush..it actually made some little roses this year, which i truly wasn't expecting. the leaves have some kind of ook on them though and kathy suggested some kind of rose medicine that jane uses so we got some stuff and doctored them a little bit. i hope it helps because i really want to keep that rose bush.

these aren't the prettiest flowers ever but i'm hoping that it's just a little sign of promise that it really is a healthy plant and that next year it'll do it up right. we worked in the yard monday. and when i say "we" i'm using that term pretty loosely. in this case, "we" worked means greg worked and the rest of us followed him around and watched him. the boys and i pitched in here and there when he told us what he wanted - they helped a lot more than i did. i was kind of like the foreman. lots of "put that here" and "that should go there" was pretty much my contribution.

we didn't really have anything new to put out except the lilacs the boys gave me for mother's day and the knockout roses sarah beth gave me but lots of things got moved around.

including the firewood, which got restacked. the world's most gigantic hostas got moved from the front of the house (which was looking jungle-ish) to the back on the edge of the hill, along with an azalea that's been in the middle of the yard all by itself for the 6 years we've been here.

when we moved here there was a pool and the azalea was on the corner of the pool. we filled in the pool, and so after that the azalea looked like it was just plunked out in the middle of everything and looked pretty goofy. (took 6 years and 5 minutes to move it.) we now have lilacs in the front and in the back, so everywhere we are we'll be able to smell their sweet scent when they're in bloom. and because those stupid cicadas are plotting to kill the lilacs and the roses, all of those plants got covered up with netting. except for my very favorite lilac, which is at this point wearing a netting skirt (greg said it's a hula skirt)

because we ran out and haven't bought any more yet. kathy said the cicadas only have a couple more weeks. that's probably how long it'll take us to go buy more netting. max dismantled one cicada - he was fascinated with it - so that cicada won't be doing much damage.
