today is my dad's birthday and we got to celebrate with him here at our house. his favorite thing at o'charley's is a great big ol' salad with chicken in it, so we had our own little salad bar with lots of goodies to add on including some crispy chicken tenders and his favorite dressing, which seems to be anything with balsamic vinegar in it. we made our own "great big ol' salads".

and had hot rolls and butter and some apple butter i made this morning. yum! he even got the special plate since he's the birthday boy. mom brought along dad's traditional birthday cake..prune cake, which despite the name is really really good. we used to call it spice cake so the boys would eat it because they never would even try it if prune was in the name. even dried plum cake sounds better. whatever you call it, it's delicious and it's tradition. max wanted to put 79 candles on the cake but i assured him that wasn't a good idea.

we settled for the number candles, which actually got a chuckle out of my dad. mom said she thought he was speechless...surely not. we sang the regular happy version of happy birthday for him (instead of his gloom and doom version) and then had some cake. delicious as always. we have to savor it because it's a once-a- year thing. we had a great evening together.

i love my parents.
on every birthday, dad calls and sings his gloom and doom ditty for the birthday person. the boys called him and sang his own song to him this morning.

that video is priceless
I love the cake...you liar you...well, maybe we could call it stretching the truth. Mark Ellis knows that same birthday song...almost the same...some word changes but the same lovely tune. Happy Birthday Max.
