getting caught up

i decided that even though blogging on dialup is possible, it wasn't going to happen. better things to do with my time than wait for pages to load! i did check email and myspace and all that but didn't take the time to do much else online. we pretty much stuck to our "beach routine" for the 2 weeks we were there. we really loved our time with my cousin bob and his family, and with my mom and dad, of course! we did have a few days when luke was feeling pretty bad - fever, sore throat, sleeping all day long. but with God's hand on him and some help from a sweet friend and a pharmacy, we made it through. we were able to spend some more time with my mamaw (who is now living in NC with my aunt and uncle). bob and i requested fried pies, a treat we remember her making when we were kids. so i promised to help and she said she'd do it. she's 97 now and tires easily but she is a trooper and we got it done. blake helped too, he was in charge of cinnamon-sugar sprinklage. we didn't get the pleasure of homemade pastry this time (she didn't feel like it and i didn't want to do it that day either) but they were good anyway. we had cherry, peach, and apple. yum!
i asked my dad if he'd go play putt-putt with us and to my surprise, he did! the boys and i had SO much fun with him. he was hilarious. he never means to be, but we love him so much that we just get so tickled when he does what he does. he kept telling us he hadn't golfed in a long time (he hasn't) but he ended up skunking us. such a great time. we were sweating buckets and getting bug bites but oh well.

blake made monkey bread...just had to throw that in.

much of our time was spent at the beach. my dad walks 4 miles pretty much every day. we go over early, on the beach at least by 8:30. that way we get our ocean/sun fix before the day gets too unbearably hot. i even talked my mom and dad into skipping church sunday and going to the beach with me instead. it didn't actually take too much effort. i'm such a bad influence. our smith friends had a condo disaster that weekend in north myrtle, so dad did a little work and they ended up staying in a condo 2 buildings down from us. added lots to the fun already in progress! beach, pool, gator sightings, haircuts, storms, power outages, a birthday party, burger grilling, fishing, snake trauma, and so on. because i have the best husband ever, we got to stay a couple more days than we'd planned so we could have time there with nathan and kathy. then i ended up with another extra day because greg was working at the hospital all day the day after we were supposed to be going home. he suggested we just travel thursday since he wouldn't be able to be home anyway.....well.....OK! on our next to last night, we had hotdogs and a visit from mamaw. she'd been craving oak hill wv dairy queen hotdogs. we couldn't swing those but we had betty blake hotdogs, which are just as good. it was good to see her again and have time with her and our family together. it's always a bit hard to say goodbye to her, even when she only lived 2 hours away from me. but this 8 plus hour trip to see her now is difficult to do often. we promised her we'd be by to see her one more time before we left. our last day was good - perfect weather, time on the beach, lunch with my boys and mom and dad at my favorite sunset gourmet, supper with all of us plus our smiths, and then another little visit with mamaw. the boys and i sat in her room with her for awhile, just talking. she looked them over good, told them how much she loved them and how they're growing. they each got (and gave) a big hug and kiss. we had our hug and goodbye and then i tried to get us out quickly because i was about to lose it. my boys took good care of me though - hugs and sweet words from them when we were back in the van. next morning, we headed for home. (i should mention that it's also hard to leave my mom and dad. even though next week they'll be back in my town.) i stopped at sunset gourmet for a latte', which ended up being jo's treat (yay! 4 shots free for me! and yes, i know that's a lot of espresso). then a stop for gas, a stop for breakfast for my boys and away we went. our trip was uneventful, everyone got along, we made great time, and were we ever glad to see greg when we got home! he had told us he'd have supper ready when we got home. blake asked him if that meant he was going to have the car running ready to go to taco bell. but he had baked chicken/baked potatoes and steamed veggies ready to roll. what a man.
