yeah, so this one's a little long

as usual, there's been a lot going on here. first i'll just mention that we've all made it through the first week of school very well and without incident...now i'll back up a little. max turned 9 last sunday. of course we had a little celebration. one great thing about being home in the huntington area after so much time away is that most of our family gets together for the birthday celebrations. and when we all get together we're quite a crowd. we had blakes and napiers and creasys wall-to-wall. this year drew started classes at marshall, so we got to have him here with us, which we loved. max got the traditional birthday spankings from poppy, along with pop's minor-keyed very sad birthday song (sin and sorrow everywhere, people dying in despair...happy birthday...), then moved on to some ice cream sandwich cake. (i ought to mention that that thing was pretty yummy.) next he got to open lots of little flat rectangular birthday gifts - his favorite kind these days! all of them combined helped him to buy something he's been waiting for, which is an amp for his guitar. as soon as his guests had gone, it was off to rt. 60 music for the amp. we heard lots of interesting effects from his guitar out of that thing that afternoon. some i like, some not so much. but that's the breaks. instead of a birthday party with his buddies, max opted for a trip to camden park with his family and 3 of our smiths (kathy, alyson and andrew). max had never been, so it was fun for greg and i to see him (them) experience something we have so many memories of from our own childhoods. i remember it being a lot bigger than it is now, though. he and his brothers had a really good time. max was fearless. he was in the front seat of the big dipper each time he rode it. and he and blake rode some ridiculous ride that just goes around in a circle (and maybe the floor drops out?) plus it goes up on its side. kathy and i stood there and wondered why we let our babies just walk onto a machine that does things like that. when the ride was over, all he had to say was "that was awesome!" blake and luke were really good to ride with him and help him have fun. blake got a little driving experience on the bumper cars. so did luke. now i'm not sure i'll ever let either of them drive. greg and i got away with only riding a couple of things. and it was actually pretty fun to be the ones who just walked around holding stuff and taking pictures and pushing kathy's stroller for her when she forgot and left it at most of the rides we stopped at. sunday was max's actual birthday, so we came home after church for his birthday lunch and some more cake. we spent a lot of the afternoon watching some old videos. we watched max's birth, which he thought was pretty cool. (FYI, it was very tastefully recorded!) we had so much fun watching tape after tape of little creasy boys. they loved seeing themselves and each other, and greg and i just loved being reminded of so many of the cute little things they said and did, and the way their voices sounded when they were little guys. it's funny to see them in those tapes from years ago and then look at them now and see those little baby boy faces in their faces still. and to see how they are and have always been uniquely themselves. what miracles they are! and how blessed we are to have them. now, why we watched all this on the day before school started, i'm not sure. the next morning we were up before the sun, getting ready for the big day. we knew who a few of their teachers were going to be, and we were glad about who they were having. max's teacher is one that blake and luke both had, and we just loved her. we requested (politely demanded?) that he have her. luke has a couple of teachers who are friends of our family and some teachers that we know because blake had them last year. we were all happy with the way his schedule turned out. and i mentioned before that blake's homeroom teacher is a friend from church. the first day came and went and was a good one all the way around. they were all delivered safely to 3 different schools. they had lots to tell when they got home that first day and the rest of the days of this first week. everyone had a good week. we're all pretty tired though. this morning when i woke max up he said "mama, it's been a long week..." i told him "you're only 9. they get longer." luke is back in his element - socialization!! he's a very good student but i think his main interest in school is being back with his friends. i've said many times that he's just there for the party! max is already a blue ribbon reader in the A.R. program. blake made it through the first week only using the map of the school the first day, which i say is an accomplishment. lots of new experiences for them. i still can't believe we have a child in high school. it's sinking in, but slowly. it is just such an odd feeling. luke is in his last year of middle school, max is halfway through elementary. time is flying. at breakneck speed, no less. we went to the high school football game tonight. our team lost, but greg caught a tshirt that came flying up at us from one of those slingshot dealies and you can buy a sweet tea for $1, so the night wasn't a total loss.

Camden Park...love it...We want to take our little kids there someday. And you are right, it does seem a lot smaller than when we were kids. Did you get any cotton candy...that and a pronot pup...
